Planning a corporate event doesn't have to mean another ballroom, another buffet, and another evening where everyone makes polite conversation with the same five coworkers they already see every day.

A great theme can completely change the energy of an event.

Whether you're planning an employee appreciation party, company anniversary, holiday celebration, awards dinner, fundraiser, conference reception, or summer company picnic, the right theme gives everything else a direction. It helps guide your venue, decor, food, entertainment, dress code, and even the photos your guests take throughout the event.

Here in Kansas City, we have another advantage: we know how to celebrate.

From our sports culture and incredible food to historic architecture, arts, music, and some truly beautiful event venues, Kansas City gives corporate event planners plenty to work with.

The best part? A corporate event theme doesn't have to be elaborate or outrageously expensive to be memorable. It just needs to fit your people and give them a reason to participate.

Here are some corporate event theme ideas to get you started.

1. Everything Kansas City

If you're hosting an event in Kansas City, sometimes the best theme is sitting right outside the door.

A Kansas City-themed corporate event can be especially fun for companies welcoming out-of-town employees, clients or conference attendees, but locals can have just as much fun celebrating the city we love.

Think Kansas City BBQ, fountains, jazz, skyline imagery, local foods, neighborhood-inspired decor and plenty of hometown personality.

Depending on your audience, you can also bring in Kansas City's famous sports culture with team-inspired colors and game-day elements.

For photos, a Kansas City skyline, recognizable local landmarks, or custom KC-themed graphics can turn a simple photo into a great souvenir from the event.

Great for: Conferences, client events, company celebrations, and out-of-town guests.

2. Old Hollywood and Red Carpet

Give everyone an excuse to dress up!

An Old Hollywood or red-carpet corporate event can feel glamorous without taking itself too seriously. Think black, gold, deep red, velvet ropes, dramatic lighting, and maybe even a faux paparazzi entrance.

Guests can arrive dressed for the occasion, walk the red carpet, and have their moment in front of the camera.

A beautiful black-and-white portrait or dramatic glamour photo also fits this theme perfectly and gives guests something much better to take home than another company pen.

Great for: Awards nights, milestone celebrations and formal employee appreciation events.

3. Movie or TV Show Theme

Lights, camera, corporate party!

A favorite movie or television show can become an incredibly fun corporate event theme, especially when you carry the idea beyond a few decorations and let guests step into the story.

Think the timeless black-and-white glamour of Casablanca, an adventure in a galaxy far, far away, the retro fun of Grease, the mystery of a classic spy movie or even a theme inspired by a popular television series your group loves. Sets, lighting, music, food and themed activities can all help bring the idea to life.

This is also one of those themes where photos can become part of the experience instead of simply documenting it. A creative backdrop, digital scene or AI photo experience can make guests feel like they've stepped onto a movie set or become part of the cast. Even simple themed props and a thoughtfully designed photo area can produce some seriously cute and memorable pictures.

Just remember that you don't have to recreate every detail from the original movie or show. Sometimes the most successful events take inspiration from the colors, setting, era, or overall feeling and create their own version of that world.

Great for: Employee appreciation events, holiday parties, company celebrations, themed fundraisers, and teams that love an excuse to play along.

4.Casino Night

Casino night is a corporate-event classic for a reason. It gives guests something to do.

Instead of expecting everyone to mingle for several hours, blackjack, roulette, poker and other casino-style games create natural interaction between employees who may not normally spend much time together.

Add Vegas-inspired signage, cocktail tables, playing-card details and sophisticated lighting to complete the atmosphere.

Photos can lean glamorous, playful or full Vegas depending on your crowd.

Great for: Employee appreciation events, fundraisers, holiday parties and networking events.

5. Disco or Studio 54

Bring on the disco balls!

A Studio 54-inspired corporate party gives you permission to go big with metallics, sparkle, bold lighting, seventies fashion and an excellent playlist.

This is also one of those themes that practically begs people to participate. Guests can dress in seventies-inspired outfits without needing elaborate costumes, and the decor can range from sophisticated disco glam to completely over-the-top.

Mirrored surfaces, silver fringe, colorful lighting and disco balls also photograph beautifully.

Great for: Holiday parties, company celebrations and teams that aren't afraid to have some fun.

6. Roaring Twenties or Gatsby

It IS the 20s after all!

Art Deco styling, black and gold, feathers, pearls, vintage cocktails and glamorous attire make the Roaring Twenties an easy theme to build around.

It can be elegant enough for a formal corporate event while still giving guests plenty of room to play with the theme.

For photos, consider vintage-inspired backgrounds, or even black-and-white images that look like they could have come from another era.

Great for: Galas, fundraisers, formal dinners and milestone celebrations.

7. Western Inspired

Western doesn't have to mean hay bales and plastic cowboy hats.

A modern Western corporate event can be seriously stylish. Think denim, leather, fringe, boots, warm wood tones, neon signs, and just enough sparkle to play the "rhinestone" part of the theme.

Kansas City and the surrounding Midwest make this theme feel especially natural, and it works for everything from a casual employee party to a polished corporate celebration.

A Western-inspired photo area can be as simple as great lighting and a textured backdrop or as elaborate as a fully styled set.

Great for: Company parties, summer events, employee appreciation and casual corporate celebrations.

8. Corporate Speakeasy

Want something sophisticated with a little mystery?

Create a speakeasy! Guests might receive a secret password before the event or enter through an unexpected doorway, only to discover a room filled with moody lighting, jazz, vintage details, and classic cocktails.

This theme works particularly well in historic Kansas City venues where the architecture can become part of the experience.

Vintage-style portraits or black-and-white photos fit naturally into the atmosphere without competing with the decor.

Great for: Client entertainment, executive events, holiday parties and company anniversaries.

9. Around the World

An Around the World event gives you endless possibilities.

Different areas of the venue can represent different destinations through food, music, decor and interactive experiences.

This can work especially well for companies with employees, offices or clients in multiple countries.

One important consideration: keep the focus on celebrating places, food, art and experiences rather than reducing cultures to costumes or stereotypes.

Done thoughtfully, this can become a beautiful, interactive event that encourages guests to explore the entire venue.

Great for: Large companies, conferences, multicultural organizations and employee celebrations.

10. Game Day Watch Party

This one almost writes itself in Kansas City. We take game day seriously.

A sports or tailgate-themed corporate event can include stadium-style food, yard games, jerseys, team colors and friendly competition.

You don't necessarily have to build the event around one professional team, either. Let employees represent their favorite teams or divide departments into their own fictional franchises.

For Kansas City companies hosting visitors, a game-day theme can also give guests a taste of the city's famous sports culture.

Great for: Casual corporate parties, employee appreciation, fall events and company picnics.

11. Winter Wonderland

A corporate holiday party doesn't necessarily need to revolve around one specific holiday.

A Winter Wonderland theme can feel festive, elegant, and welcoming to a broader group of employees. Think white, silver, icy blue, twinkle lights, snow-covered trees, candlelight, and beautiful winter textures.

You can make it glamorous, cozy, or whimsical, depending on your company culture.

Winter scenes also create gorgeous photos, especially when the decor, lighting, and photo experience are designed together rather than treated as separate elements.

Great for: Holiday parties, year-end celebrations, and winter galas.

12. Neon and Glow Party

For something completely different, turn down the lights.

Neon signs, glowing furniture, blacklights, LED elements, and bold colors can transform an ordinary venue into something completely unexpected.

This theme works particularly well for companies with younger teams, creative industries or anyone wanting an event that feels energetic rather than formal.

GIFs, Boomerangs and other movement-based photos can be especially fun with this kind of event because the lighting and color become part of the image.

Great for: Product launches, creative companies, after-parties and high-energy employee events.

13. Decades Party

Can't decide on one era? Choose one decade or use several.

The seventies, eighties, nineties and early two-thousands all offer guests recognizable music, fashion and pop culture inspiration. You could even assign different departments different decades and let them compete for the best outfits.

The soundtrack alone can make this theme worth it.

Photos are another way to have fun. Different designs can mimic the visual style of each era.

Great for: Employee parties, anniversaries, holiday events, and casual celebrations.

14. Your Company Through the Decades

This is one of my favorite ideas for a company celebrating a major anniversary.

Instead of choosing a random theme, make the company's own history the theme.

Display old photographs, previous logos, products, advertisements, uniforms, office equipment, or memorable milestones. Create a timeline showing where the company started and how it grew.

Longtime employees can contribute photos and stories, while newer employees get a chance to understand the history they're now part of.

It becomes more than a party. It becomes a celebration of the people who built the company.

Great for: Ten-, twenty-five-, fifty-year and other major company anniversaries.

15. Future, AI, and Innovation

If your company is looking toward the future, why not make that the theme?

A future-focused event can incorporate modern lighting, metallic finishes, digital displays, interactive technology, and AI-inspired experiences.

This theme can be sleek and sophisticated rather than looking like a science-fiction movie.

AI photo experiences can transform guests into characters, place them inside imaginative environments, or create images that would be impossible with a traditional backdrop.

The technology becomes part of the entertainment, not simply a way to document it.

Great for: Technology companies, conferences, product launches, innovation events, and forward-thinking organizations.

Who Is Actually Attending?

Start with your guests, not the decor. Is this an employee-only event? Are spouses and families invited? Will clients be attending? Are executives and frontline employees celebrating together? The best corporate event theme is one your guests will actually enjoy participating in.

What Are You Celebrating?

An employee appreciation picnic should probably feel different from a fifty-year company anniversary. Start with the purpose of the event.

Are you celebrating accomplishments? Thanking employees? Entertaining clients? Launching something new? Bringing remote teams together?

Your theme should support the reason everyone is gathering.

Formal or Casual?

There's no universally correct answer. A black-tie gala can be incredible.

So can eating BBQ in jeans while your CEO gets destroyed at giant Jenga.

Know your people.

Does the Theme Work With Your Venue?

Your Kansas City event venue can handle much of the work for you.

A historic building may be perfect for a speakeasy theme. A modern industrial space could look incredible for a neon or innovation event.

Before spending money transforming a venue, consider choosing a theme that complements what's already there.

Will People Participate?

A theme shouldn't just be something guests look at.

Give them something to do. Games, competitions, food experiences, entertainment, interactive stations, and creative photo opportunities can turn a pretty room into an actual experience.

Will It Photograph Well?

This may sound like a small detail when you're planning an entire corporate event, but think about what happens afterward.

Photos are often what remain. Employees post them. Companies share them internally. Marketing teams use them on social media. They end up in newsletters, annual reports, recruiting materials, and next year's event promotion, even on desks and refrigerators.

Whether you're hiring a professional photographer, creating a photo booth experience, or simply encouraging guests to use their phones, think about how your event will look through a camera lens.

Good lighting, backgrounds, and clutter matter.

Make the Photos Part of the Experience

Here's something I've learned after years of creating photo experiences at Kansas City events: People don't just want proof that they attended.

They want a photo they actually like.

When photography is treated as part of the entertainment, guests loosen up. They grab coworkers. Departments challenge each other. The executive team suddenly decides they need one more picture. People come back later in the evening because someone has a new idea.

The photos become part of the fun.

You don't necessarily need a photo booth to make that happen.

Create an interesting photo location. Think about lighting. Give people room for group photos. Use your theme. Incorporate company branding where it makes sense. Encourage people to take pictures.

If you do choose a photo booth or interactive photo experience, take advantage of what the photo booth company can actually do with their equipment. Custom photo designs, branded overlays, themed backdrops, GIFs, Boomerangs, digital backgrounds, and AI experiences can extend your event theme into the photos guests take home. The key is making the branding feel like part of the design.

Your Corporate Event Doesn't Need to Feel Corporate

Some of the best company events are the ones where people forget, at least temporarily, that they're at a company event. They laugh, try something new, take ridiculous pictures with coworkers, and finally meet the person they've emailed for three years.

Whether you're planning a huge Kansas City corporate event, a company holiday party, an employee appreciation celebration, or a milestone anniversary, don't start by asking: "What's trendy?"

Ask: "What would our people genuinely enjoy?" Build from there.

If you happen to create an event where everyone looks amazing and leaves with fantastic photos? Even better!
